How to plan a proposal in Paris: places, timing and what can go wrong

Nine Paris proposal spots with crowds, light and metro, plus sunrise and sparkle times, hiding the photographer and rain plans.

I photograph proposals in Paris. Below: where to do it, at what hour, how to keep a photographer out of sight, and what to do when the plan breaks. Hours and rules were checked in October 2026.

Four places with the Eiffel Tower

Trocadéro shows the whole tower with the fountain below. The usual position is on the stairs going down from the esplanade to the gardens. It is the best-known viewpoint, so a clean background means sunrise. The gardens are open 24 hours. Metro: Trocadéro, lines 6 and 9.

Avenue de Camoëns is a dead-end street about 116 metres long, a few minutes on foot from Trocadéro station. One end is a pedestrian staircase and the tower stands behind it. Stand at the top of the stairs. Photographers now turn up there even at weekday sunrises, so expect to wait for a gap.

Rue de l'Université ends in a dead end at Allée Paul-Deschanel, right by the tower, which closes the view at the end of the street. Travel guides report it empty around sunrise and full by about 8:30. Parked cars are part of the frame, with fewer of them early in the morning.

Pont de Bir-Hakeim has two levels: the road and pavements below, the metro viaduct above on metal colonnades. The steel columns and the tower fit in one frame, and the viaduct keeps you dry. Metro: Bir-Hakeim or Passy, line 6. On Sunday 18 October and on 8 and 22 November 2026, line 6 is cut between Charles de Gaulle-Étoile and La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle for works. Use Trocadéro on line 9 or École Militaire on line 8 instead.

Five places without the tower

Pont Alexandre III gives you Art Nouveau lamps, four gilt-bronze statues on 17-metre pedestals and the dome of Les Invalides at one end. Guides recommend it for sunset. Metro: Invalides (lines 8 and 13, RER C) or Champs-Élysées-Clemenceau (lines 1 and 13).

At the Louvre, the Cour Napoléon with the pyramid is open from 7:30 to 21:00 and the Cour Carrée from 7:30 to 19:45. The museum opens at 9:00 and is closed on Tuesdays, so the early slot comes before the entrance queues at the pyramid. Metro: Palais-Royal/Musée du Louvre, lines 1 and 7.

The Palais Royal garden is free and open from 8:00 to 20:30 between October and March, and until 22:30 from April to September. It opens too late for a summer sunrise. Metro lines 1, 7 and 14.

In Montmartre, Sacré-Cœur is open from 6:30 to 22:30, and the basilica itself warns of queues between 10:30 and 17:00, which tells you when the forecourt is full. Behind it, Square Marcel-Bleustein-Blanchet (1 rue de la Bonne) shows the back of the basilica and gets fewer visitors. Until 24 October 2026 it opens at 8:00 on weekdays and 9:00 at weekends and closes at 18:30. From 25 October it closes at 17:00 on weekdays. In autumn that is before sunset, so plan a morning. Metro: Lamarck-Caulaincourt, line 12.

On Île Saint-Louis, Quai d'Orléans and Quai de Bourbon meet at Pont Saint-Louis, the only bridge to Île de la Cité. Metro: Pont Marie, line 7.

A private boat with a skipper can also be booked online. One such listing runs an hour and a half from Quai du Louvre past Pont Alexandre III, the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame. The photographer has to be on board, so the surprise depends on your cover story.

Sunrise, sunset and the sparkle

Sunrise has soft light and the fewest people. Sunset has warm light and a crowd. The season moves both. In mid-January the sun rises at about 8:37 and sets at 17:23. In mid-April it is 6:58 and 20:43, in mid-July 6:01 and 21:52, in mid-October 8:09 and 19:03. A July sunrise needs a convincing excuse for the early start. An October sunrise fits into a normal morning walk.

The tower's golden lighting switches on at nightfall. The sparkle runs for five minutes at the start of each hour after dark. The tower closes at 23:45, the lights go off at midnight, and the last sparkle is at midnight. In summer the lights and the hourly sparkle run until 1:00. In mid-October 2026 that means sparkles at 20:00, 21:00, 22:00, 23:00 and midnight.

At night the tower is lit and your faces are not. Without a flash or a small continuous light the photo shows two silhouettes.

How to hide the photographer

There are four common setups. A photographer can arrive early and stand there as a tourist with a camera. You can agree on a signal, such as taking off your jacket or stopping to tie a shoe. You can share your live location, so the photographer sees you coming. And you can fix the exact spot and pose in advance from a photo of the place: where you stop, which way your partner faces, which knee goes down.

What goes wrong and the backup for each

Your partner ends up with their back to the camera. Fix it beforehand: agree on which side you stand, then turn your partner toward the view before you kneel.

The ring is in a tight jeans pocket. Keep the box in an outer jacket pocket on the side away from your partner, and practise taking it out.

You are late. Sunrise light changes in minutes, so send the photographer a message when you leave and agree on a second spot that works later.

It rains. Decide the covered backup the day before.

The spot is crowded. Move to a second angle chosen in advance, or wait for a gap.

The place is closed. Squares and courtyards have hours and metro lines have works. Check both the day before.

What to wear

Use a nice breakfast or dinner as the reason to dress up. Solid colours photograph better than logos and small patterns. Wear shoes you can kneel in, and remember that wet pavement marks light trousers.

Right after the yes

Do a short session of the two of you while the emotion is fresh. Then eat. Book a table within walking distance for shortly after the planned moment, or pick a café nearby for coffee and calls to family.

Rain

Covered options are the space under the Bir-Hakeim viaduct, the arcades around the Palais Royal garden, and the covered passages. One guide lists Galerie Vivienne as open daily from 8:30 to 20:00 and Passage des Panoramas from 6:00 to midnight.
